Year-long interns in Mexico

Year-long interns in Mexico teaching at the English House!

Internships are a valuable part of our ministry at CrossRoads Missions. Across all our fields we employ summer interns to help with daily tasks, lead groups, and start creative projects. But we also believe that providing internships furthers our mission of discipleship. “We believe that the time that interns spend with us is invaluable for spiritual development and the maturing of a servant’s heart that will stay with them long after they have returned home,” explained the Mexico team in a recent post about their year-long interns.

Year-long interns get to delve deeper into life as a missionary. This type of internship allows you to build deeper relationships with partners and staff, meet many more volunteer groups, and gain more responsibility for long-term projects in the field. “We have a small full-time team and as we continue to take on more projects to serve and meet the needs of our city we need more help,” continues the Mexico team. “Our interns are involved in every aspect of what we do from caring for immigrants, helping lead volunteer teams, to teaching English classes.”

This year our Mexico field has three year-long interns, who at the time of this writing are halfway through their internship! They have already accomplished so much, and have much more time to continue that impact on Piedras Negras.

Melany Perez

Melany grew up around CrossRoads, learning about the ministry through her Mom, a teacher at a local Christian school who helps coordinate school partnerships with CrossRoads in Piedras Negras. In the spring of 2023, Melany offered her bilingual skills to our groups as a guide on Cultural Immersion day. After interacting with the volunteers and getting to use her English teaching training for ministry, Melany decided to dedicate a full year to CrossRoads.

“Meeting new people and having that same interest of serving God and seeing His faithfulness throughout the week was one of the highlights of my time with CrossRoads,” explains Melany. “I am excited to see God’s work during this internship and to see the different hearts that we touch and meet along the way.”

Melany is currently pursuing a degree in Education, and she uses her experience teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) in the English House, a new ministry that provides English classes for all ages. Melany is also in charge of the ministry’s social media!

Hannah Caskey

Hannah was introduced to CrossRoads through Kingsway Christian School on their mission trip in 2021. While Hannah has always felt a call to missions, it was that trip that pushed her to pursue missions on a larger scale. After a follow-up trip on her own to help with a group, Hannah decided that Piedras Negras was where she needed to be.

While she is also learning Spanish, Hannah assists in teaching at the English House. “I love the teaching atmosphere and I love the way teaching can connect you to new people you wouldn’t have met otherwise,” shared Hannah about her experience. She also uses her culinary skills to help prepare meals after church service, and was instrumental in creating our 360 experience for TCTC earlier this year. “Her outgoing personality and Godly joy have been great tools so far as she works with our team and forms new friendships,” praised the Mexico team.

Larissa Montero

Larissa is a Piedras Negras native who has volunteered with CrossRoads many times over the years. In early 2023 Larissa was volunteering when she was struck by the immigrants’ need for education. With her background in education and degree in educational psychology, Larissa helped create curriculum and implement the Ranch School for immigrants. Classes include English, Art, PE, Bible, Health, and more.

“One of my dreams has always been to serve and share with people that are going through difficult times,” explained Larissa. Shortly after setting up the Ranch School, Larissa decided to become a year-long intern in order to expand those classes and teach at the English School. “I yearn for God to give me wisdom, understanding and discernment to serve Him in the best way,’ continues Larissa, “to take advantage of every day and to learn from those I meet along the way. May God make me sensitive to see what He wants me to see and give me a heart to serve Him as He has planned for me.”
